As an artisan, he is essentially self taught. But his wife is also an artisan and, together, they sought to develop their own designs and style. She works in arpilleria, or embroidered patchwork applique, while he works in ceramic. "As artists, we walk hand in hand," he says. "We both feel and transmit our energy in this wide and wonderful world." A dedicated family man, Balcazar Chavez is very proud of his roots. "I'm happy to be able to support my family with my designs," he confides. To his Novica friends, he says, "Thank you for helping Peruvian artisans. Thank you for your interest in my handicrafts, each one made with great affection for each of you."
