Christmas decorations through the ages

For most of us, Christmas is a time for peace and goodwill towards all mankind, and to exchange gifts and share moments of happiness with our friends and families. Traditions of Christmas decorations are rooted in customs that date back several centuries, and we provide an important link with the continuation of our cultural and spiritual heritage.

For a devout Christian, Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Christ, and with the Passover, it is the most important event in the religiouscalendar. The word "Christmas" comes from the sense MAESS Cristea, "Old English" Christ Mass ".

The tradition of Christmas has its origins in the customs and pagan beliefs that go back well before the Christian era.

Pagan Romans honored Saturn, the god of agriculture, beginning with a harvest festival seven days on December 17. After completing the harvest, people would celebrate by eating, drinking, hunting, and exchange gifts. In the 4th century AD,officials of the Roman Catholic Church has decided to create the birth of Jesus in the same period last year in the festival of Saturn, to encourage people to honor and celebrate Jesus' birth in the place of their gods Traditional Pagan. The actual date of Christ's birth is unknown.

As Christianity spread in Europe, the celebration of Christmas was also combined with the Norse pagan celebration called Yule or winter solstice. This festival was held on the shortest day of the year,commemorate the return of the sun, and the symbolic death of the old year and the birth of the new. The tradition of burning Yule log, still very popular especially in Europe, comes from this ancient custom.

Christmas traditions have evolved and changed over many centuries and still do today. Much of the joy of Christmas comes from the imagination, creativity, and find new and exciting ways to celebrate the season, especially for children.

Although someChristmas traditions have roots dating back thousands of years, many of the most familiar are much more recent origins. The custom of celebrating Christmas only began to be adopted in North America in the 19th century.

The Christmas Tree

One of the traditions of Christmas is the biggest Christmas tree. The tree is the centerpiece of our Christmas decorations, and we place our gifts of application, so it becomes a kind of focal point for our Christmasspirit in the house.

There are many legends that explain the religious and spiritual significance of evergreen trees, related to their pagan and Christian traditions. A popular story holds that Martin Luther, the founder of the Protestant Church, was walking in the woods one Christmas Eve, and I was captivated by the beauty of stars shining through the branches of trees. He cut a small fir tree, took his family, and decorated with candles to recreate the imagestarlight twinkling.

The tradition of Christmas tree is supposed to have originated in Germany in the 16th century. Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, is often credited with popularizing decorated Christmas tree in England in the mid 19th century. Its tree at Windsor Castle was decorated with gingerbread, fruit and sweets.

The custom of Christmas trees began to be adopted in North America in the late 19th and early 20th. Queen Victoria was unhappy with itconsidered the most vulgar customs surrounding Christmas, and made efforts to limit them. She started a new custom that for every kiss under the mistletoe, a berry would be torn from the crown. When there were no more berries left, no kiss was longer permitted!

Crèche or nursery

A model illustrating the history of the birth of Christ is a reminder of the importance of the feast of the Christian faith. The tradition is believed to have started with StFrancis of Assisi in the early 13th century. St. Francis held mass in front of a nativity scene made by a local craftsman in the Italian village of Greccio.
